Shelf life, heat and why tape goes bad in a Gujarat summer

Adhesive ages, and it ages faster on a hot shelf. Simple storage rules that keep a 12-month shelf life from quietly becoming a six-month one.

Every tape we make is rated up to 12 months. That figure is not a countdown printed on a carton — it is a statement about storage conditions, and in Ahmedabad those conditions are not automatic. A roll stored badly through April and May can be noticeably worse by June.

What heat actually does

Adhesive is a soft polymer. Warm it and it flows more easily; keep it warm and it keeps flowing. In a roll that shows up as the adhesive migrating to the edges, which makes the roll stick to itself and squeal or tear on unwind. Hotmelt and natural rubber adhesives are the most sensitive to this. Acrylic is the most patient.

Sunlight adds a second problem. UV attacks the backing as well as the adhesive, so a roll left near a window goes brittle on the outer wraps while the core is still fine — which is why the first few metres tear and the rest of the roll seems acceptable.

Six rules that cover almost everything

Let cold tape warm up before you use it

A roll brought out of an air-conditioned store onto a hot line, or vice versa, needs time to equalise. Applied cold, the adhesive is too stiff to wet the surface and the bond never properly forms — the tape looks applied and fails a day later. An hour or two in the environment where it will be used is usually enough.

How to tell a roll has aged

Ordering little and often beats ordering big and rarely

MOQ starts at 1 box and ready stock is held across the range, so there is no reason to buy nine months of tape and watch it age on a shelf. Order to your consumption and the shelf life takes care of itself.
